Henry VIII (Routledge Historical Biographies) 1st Edition

This is a clear, concise and readable history of the reign of Henry VIII. The author may sacrifice a bit in the way of detail, and she barely treats the context of contemporaneous European history in which Henry VIII was situated, but these decisions help to keep the topic manageable. Like most historical overviews, the writing is not exactly elegant or riveting, but it is certainly a cut above the average textbook and some sections are quite interesting. Overall, this is a good survey of the major conflicts and themes of Henry's long and colorful reign. It should be useful to anyone looking for an academic (rather than popular) biography.

The book arrived in good condition as stated by the buyer. The content, for me is excellent, covering the principal events and situations in Henry VIII's reign both clearly and readably - not something that I can say for many historical works. An excellent introduction to the subject matter.

Clear, concise and very interesting. Written well in a way that can be understood by hobby historians as well as the more professional and educated than me!! Would recommend this book highly to anyone interested in more than just the usual Henry V111 stories of chopping off his wives heads etc. etc. Much much more to this fascinating King, and Lucy Wooding brought it very much alive for me.

Was für ein Wälzer! Was für eine Freude!Super gut recherchiert, sehr spannend geschrieben. So hatte ich mir diesen König nicht vorgestellt, obwohl ich mich schon öfter mit ihm befasst hatte. Frau George schildert ihn glaubwürdig, gefangen in seinem Amt, seiner eigenen Geschichte und seinem Umfeld. König sein ist kein Spass! Und wem kann ich trauen, wem nicht? Seine tiefe Gläubigkeit ist mir verwunderlich (aber geschichtlich belegt), schliesslich hat er die anglikanische Kirche gegründet. Da könnte man ihm auch Machtgier unterstellen, oder? Oder die Befriedigung persönlicher Wünsche, denn anders hätte er nicht Anne Boleyn heiraten können..... Aber lest selber und versteht mehr!Seine inneren Zwiespalte, die Person König und Heinrich zu vereinbaren, allen Ansprüchen (nicht zuletzt seinen eigenen) gerecht zu werden, macht aus diesem "Schinken" mehr als ein Geschichtsbuch.Wer gerne geschichtliche Romane liest, wird mit dieser Wahl sehr zufrieden sein. Und ganz nebenbei eine Menge über englische Geschichte gelernt haben! Eine Professorin für englische Geschichte hat mal geschrieben, dass die Tudor-Serie im Fernsehen kein Geschichtsunterricht ist! Wie recht sie hat.Also viel Vergnügen dabei!
