NOW Foods Supplements, Hawthorn Extract 300 mg, Cardiovascular Support*, 90 Veg Capsules

After being put on Toprol by a cardiologist, I started researching a natural alternative for treating heart palpitations and occasional racing heart. My blood pressure has always been normal; the problem with Toprol is that it is also used to lower blood pressure. I did not like the feeling of lightheadedness and no energy caused by the Toprol. Hawthorn extract has been used for years to help with heart issues. Even though it is also used for high blood pressure, it helps to regulate heart rate without causing the same problems with normal blood pressure that Toprol does. I have had very good results with Hawthorn - less palpitations, less racing heart rate, and more energy. I love Now brand products and have changed all our vitamins to this brand. They are a very good product with less fillers than other vitamins.

I got this for the purpose of protection against psychic attacks and witches. That is what the herbal books say that this herb can do. I did notice it working. I just cannot keep up with the amount I needed to keep the attacks away. I need to find another solution. But it does work for temporary break from the attack. It's just a big pill to have to take all the time for the ongoing which attack activity to stop.

I give this supplement 4 stars because it indeed works as advertised for lowering blood pressure and possibly controlling insulin response/sensitivity. However, it's effects are quite strong - stronger than what is casually discussed in any resource I could find describing it's effects on both insulin and blood pressure. Taking just one capsule with a meal sent me into a hypoglycemic tumble along with reduced heart rate to the point that I almost went to the ER. My blood pressure is usually in the low-normal range and I am hypoglycemic, but I did not realize that this particular herb would have such a pronounced double whammy effect on me. So, minus one star for the lack of warning not just on the bottle (though it does have a very vague "caution" if you have pre-existing blood pressure issues or currently take Rx meds for it) but for the lack of warning regarding potentially serious contraindications for hypoglycemia as well.

I have, for the longest time, had a fast heartbeat. I was checked out years ago by a cardiologist and had all the needed testing done. My heart is healthy and fine. However, at night, I would get annoying palpitations that would keep me awake or wake me up in the middle of the night. That rarely happens now that I have been on this product. Though I take a low dose of blood pressure medication, my blood pressure too often was close to hypertension. My BP is most often now in the 120/80 to 130/85 range . I should also mention that when I check my "Fitbit" after I have rested, my heart rate is often at "59"!!! I have never ever had a resting heartbeat that low. Usually it is more like 75-80! I also feel calmer.

Hawthorn berry does not have a good effect on me. In the past I tried another brand to manage my bp and I noticed after taking it for 3 weeks or so that it increased my heart rate. So I stopped taking it. I tried this NOW brand to see if it would make a difference but the effect is still the same on me. Might just be me but I won't take hawthorn berry again. Also, I noticed after opening the bottle, the capsules seemed to harden after a week or so. I sometimes take my supplements by opening a capsule and mix it with a little water before ingesting.
