A fantastic new offering from Thermos
I did a lot of research before buying this mug, and here is my review: Packaging: It came without a box, simply wrapped in bubble tape. OK, kids had fun popping it, but overall I would expect a little better for a relatively pricey product. If you are planning on giving it as a gift, definitely plan on creating packaging for it. First impression: From the first moment, it feels like a high-quality product. Nothing appears to be flimsy, all mechanisms, rubber stoppers, and seal-rings seem very elastic, durable, and give a sense of confidence in their longevity. Even the tea mesh seems to be made of pretty strong plastic. The stainless steel mug itself has nice thick walls, and the overall design is simple, but very elegant. Heat / Cold retention: In this area, it does it's job almost too well. 6 hours after filling it with hot water, it was still blazing hot. It's almost like the time stands still inside this mug. After 12 hours, water is still hot enough to enjoy tea/coffee. Even long after 12 hours, the mug keeps water certainly warm. If you really need the mug to keep your tea/coffee hot for hours, you can't do better than this mug. Cap: The cup is pretty comfortable to drink from. The lip on the lid feels natural, and its control of flowing liquid is great, especially for how hot my tea was coming out of it. I really like the fact that the lid locks itself when open, and does not try to close on you while drinking. The few small issues are: the lid is directly opposite the area you are drinking from. If you are driving, the lid may obscure your vision, so be careful. I didn't feel this a huge issue and I simply tilted the mug a little to the side, but this is something to be considered. Also, there is a plastic flap attached to the hinge outside of the mug... what is it for? It does not seem strong enough to hang the mug off the back-pack by it... just seems like a half-thought. Tea strainer: This is probably the biggest complaint that people had/will have with this product. Yes, it's pretty small (though more than enough for 1 teaspoon of loose tea). No, it does not retract by itself to stop the brewing process. Yes, if you drink black tea and you leave the mug full of hot water with the infuser filled with tea for hours, it will make the tea too strong and not enjoyable. However, here I have to defend the design of this mug: 1. If you don't want to over-steep your tea, after 3-5 minutes simply open the lid and take the strainer out. It's not permanently attached and is very easily removed. 2. If you are concerned about tea not having enough room to "open up", you have a small point. However, I did not notice any difference between tea made with this infuser vs. with a separate, larger infuser that I use for tea pots. However, I really don't want it to be any bigger... see #3 3. If you are driving and can't take out the strainer, you can fill the mug just enough water so that it's not touching the tea strainer when the mug is upright. When you are ready to seep your tea, flip the mug upside down; the top is pretty flat and it should stand like this on a desk or in the car without any problems. Once 3-5 minutes are up, simply flip it upright again... problem solved. Overall, I am very happy with the purchase. While the mug certainly has a few design draw-backs, I find them insignificant when compared to the heat retention, built-in tea strainer / filter, and the overall design of the lid and it being perfectly leak-proof. UPDATE: OK, now that I've used it for a little while longer, thought I would provide an update. Still love it. Great (almost too good) heat retention, comfortable to hold, easy to clean, and overall the best mug I've ever owned. The ONLY thing that I wish I could change is if the lid hinge would not be directly opposite of the drinking spout. When it's open, it can block your view if you are driving, especially if you have a small head. Overall, I figured out a way of tilting it to the side when drinking, but this is definitely something I found myself struggling with more than once. In terms of leaks, the only time I noticed a few drops (and I mean a few drops) was when I poured boiling hot water into it and closed it, which no doubt resulted from extreme steam pressure from me shaking it. During ordinary use, I never see any leaks.

My quest for the perfect drink bottle ends here
I have at least 3 travel mugs in my kitchen cabinets that I'm not using for various reasons - it doesn't keep my tea hot long enough, it leaks in my bag, it looks worn out - and so I keep searching for the perfect travel mug. This one by Thermos is THE ONE, and my quest has now ended. First of all, it really does do what it advertises it does - keep your drink hot! The tea I make scaldingly hot in the morning still ends up burning my tongue when I take a sip at 3 pm. And it does not leak in my bag at all - the cap seal is watertight! As for the top spout, it locks securely by itself but for added protection, the little metal loop clicks over the release button and prevents you from accidentally flipping the top open. And may I just say I love the flip top! It keeps the portion where your mouth comes in contact with the spout free of dust and germs and the nasty invisible things hiding in your bag (or floating around in your office). And being a rabid tea drinker since swearing off coffee years ago as per doctor's orders, the little tea infuser is a joy! Yay, no more bobbing tea bag inside the mug that plugs up the spout and keeps me from enjoying a hot drink when the morning commute happens during a polar vortex . A recommendation for future users: I've found that this Thermos works really well in keeping your drink once you've primed it first. Meaning, fill it about halfway with really hot water and leave it there for about 10 minutes or so (the longer the better, I've discovered) before filling it up with your coffee or tea. That way the inside is already warm when you put your drink it, and will not use your drink's heat to bring itself up to temperature. I would usually put the hot water in before I get ready in the morning, and by the time I'm done 30 minutes later I can take the water out and leave it to cool on the counter for use later to water plants, then go about preparing my morning tea. A suggestion for the manufacturer: Maybe in its future iteration, could you guys make the tea infuser a little larger and can it be placed lower into the canister as well? This infuser works well for small leaf teas, but for some loose leaf teas where the leaf expands significantly as it comes into contact with hot water - sencha green teas for example - there's not much room for it to spread out. Same goes out for folks like myself who prefer their tea strong, and conversely put in more than the recommended 1 or 2 tsp of loose leaf tea per serving that can fit in the present infuser. Also, since the infuser is placed high in the canister, the tea leaf only comes in contact with the hot liquid when the canister is full. Once it's on the halfway mark, there is no longer any brewing happening - and there is a waste of perfectly good tea flavor! I find myself inverting the whole thing a couple of times to keep the tea in contact with some of the liquid that's still perfectly hot inside the mug to remedy that. Not a big inconvenience, but definitely room for improvements. Also, maybe we can have a rubberized no-slip grip in the middle of the body of the mug in the next model? Not that I've already dropped my mug in the two days that I've been using it, but I wouldn't want to! Cheers!

GREAT MUG!
Thermos is definitely a brand that has got quite a history and a reputation when it comes to beverage containers! This 16oz'er with Infuser does not at all fall short. I had been eyeing an Infuser cup/mug for a couple months after one caught my eye in a mall. I came close to buying the Romaunt with Twist Valve, but could not personally justify the cost. First impression/use - the Thermos Drink Bottle is built really well, but also simple. I filled the mug with enough of a water level to steep the tea, but left enough room for the water to rise when the lid with Infuser was put on/in. (I didn't want to steep the tea while the mug was upside down). I did do a quick check after the lid was on and turned everything upside down (OVER A SINK!!) to check for leakage - and none found. The Infuser definitely holds more tea than how it looks in pictures (bigger in person). I will not guess how many ounces the Infuser can hold and have not checked to see if these specs are available online anywhere. The lid functioned well. At the end of the first day, it seemed as though the actuation of the lid release button was not as smooth as earlier (had been shutting without much resistance) but now seemed to require the button to be depressed to get the lock tab out of the way. Easy enough to do, and I may not be remembering correctly from earlier in the day. Now, I will just adjust/adapt however I need, depending on how it behaves. Not necessary to send back or lose any sleep over! Temperature - the vaccuum insulated construction is absolutely doing what it is supposed to. I consciously checked at 6 hours and YES, still a 'comfortably' warm drink. Even at 8 hours, the drink was warm, but was on that edge of feeling like it might have been 'stale' warm, or 'sitting for a long time' warm. I suspect a lot of people have topped up, moved to a different beverage, or have forgotten about their drinks in half of those times listed above, anyways. It's a testament to the temperature retention of this mug for sure, and keeps it much warmer and for longer than my Bodum travel mug!! The last characteristic I liked was the size. Gripping this to drink is pretty ergonomic. The narrowed down 16oz container is not too big and not too small. Good balance of height and diameter.

Phenomonal for keeping liquids cold, but hinge on lid WILL break!
This, and similar Thermos items rated to keep liquids cold for 24 hours are bar none the best drinking bottles on the market for this purpose. I can fill this with some ice and water and ride my Harley in 90 degree weather all day and the water remains ice cold and the ice lasts all day even with refills from less cold water. Indoors I've had water remain ice cold for as long as 36 hours. Additionally, this is perfect for a bike or motorcycle because you can grab it, unlock the lid safety wire, drink and re-close all with one hand. The plastic hinged loop on the lid is also great for carrying it around with one finger... although it would be nice if the loop had rounded edges so it didn't eventually dig into your skin a bit. That's the good news... The bad news is that the design and materials used for the hinge couldn't be less reliable. I have had 2 lids break off at the hinge in less than a year and I have NEVER dropped this even once. The bottle simply fell over and the hinge snapped apart broken. And apparently the one person I've read that said Thermos contacted him and replaced his broken lids once the they saw is review on Amazon about this was a lucky and unique individual. I contacted Thermos customer support today and was told there is absolutely no warranty on the lid, only on the container itself. They have also done nothing to improve the design even though they know it breaks all the time. They didn't even have any white lids in stock because they sell so many of them. Thermos should stand behind their products better. They know this material was a mistake and don't care. This bottle costs a LOT of money and it's ridiculous that you have to buy a replacement lid when it breaks in as little as 30 days, like mine did the first time. It's only about $3.00 for a new lid, but shipping is just as much. I decided to buy 2 of them to make the shipping a little more bearable, and since I know the lid will break again anyway. Having to spend another $6.00 or so for a lid on a water bottle is criminal... but this bottle works so well I know I'll break down and do it again when the next 2 lids break. I even bought another bottle (this one) so I have an extra... I can't live without this on those hot days on the bike... I'm very disappointed in Thermos customer support...

If you like to brew loose tea on the go, this is the best tumbler available today.
I am an avid tea drinker. I have owned just about every combination tea steeper / tumbler available. I used Tevana's branded tumbler as my go to tumbler in the past. The problem with them was the top sections kept breaking. The depressible section in the middle of the lid would wear out or break. It's mechanism is like an old style retractable pen with angled teeth that allow it to open and close with each "click". And if you dropped it almost always broke. This tumbler is excellent, It will keep tea hot longer than any other product I have owned. The lockable top cover has a silicon type gasket that really creates a tight seal. The tea basket snaps into place in another gasket once the entire top has been removed. It has a fine mesh filter that is good for fine ground tea or large whole leaf tea. As stated in their description, it holds about 4 teaspoons worth of tea. Depending on how you like your tea it can be a little small for whole leaf tea. That said, I have been very happy with the taste of tea I have brewed in this. I do increase brewing time a couple of minutes because of the loose tea expanding and getting less diffusion. It is very sturdy. I've dropped it a couple of times and winced, but it been fine. I wish the lid was removable, but given it's function it is worth the inconvenience.

Design flaws a potential purchaser should consider
This thermos will keep things hot or cold. You can sip from it without dribbling on yourself. It has a simple. attractive design. Those are the good things. Things that do not work so well: The tea infuser is plastic, and if you are considering this thermos because it is stainless steel, by using the tea infuser you are subjecting a plastic item to heat, and who knows what cousin to BPA it may be releasing into your drink? There are other equivalent drink bottles, such as one by Teavana, that use a metal tea infuser. Also, if you do not have good grip strength, the tea infuser can be difficult to open. The Teavana infuser can be lifted out of the body of the bottle with a metal handle. (If you go to Youtube there is a video that compares these two bottles. I found this comparison video by doing a search for "Thermos 16 oz.") It is also true that the tea infuser projects down into the bottle, creating some liquid displacement. Some reviewers have found out how much displacement by screwing on the lid with the infuser attached into a container of hot water. This is an opportunity to burn yourself. If you want to know how much the tea infuser displaces water use cold water and then when the water spills out and you look in the water bottle, you will know how much to fill the bottle in the future without potentially burning yourself. Thermos could help out in this regard by placing their logo on the outside of the bottle at the displacement level. Then you could easily know how much to fill the bottle if you want to make tea. If you are not filling the bottle with water to the top to make tea (and you won't be because of displacement) it is natural to want to invert the bottle and stand it on its lid so the infuser has full intact with the water. For some reason Thermos has not made the top of the lid absolutely flat, so while you can stand it on its lid, it wobbles a little bit. Note to Thermos: make the lid flat. Also, as other have noticed, when you take a sip from the thermos and close the lid, it spits a bit of the liquid that has not gone back into the bottle. This is not a large amount of liquid, but it does consistently spit. I would suggest pointing the front of the Thermos away from you when you close it. Thermos has mastered keeping things hot or cold with this bottle. It does have serious design flaws as a tea maker. If making tea in your bottle is important to you I would recommend the Teavana bottle. I am going to keep the Thermos bottle because my primary reason for buying it is its ability to keep things hot. I just won't be trying to make tea in it.

Amazing!
I love am incredibly pleased with this thermos and I highly recommend it. I wanted a sturdy, leak proof thermos to keep my beverage hot, while at work. I work as a valet, in the evenings and have no access to refills or reheats. It has been in the teens at night, during my 8+ hour shifts and this thermos keeps my tea hot the entire time. I was thrilled when I popped open the lid,(also a convenient feature), 7 hours into my shift to find the liquid inside was still hot enough to burn my tongue if not carefully sipped. I did bring the tea water to a boil before I poured it into the thermos to help ensure it stayed hot all night. I am happy to say that I do not have to use boiling water to keep my beverage hot all night in this thermos. I can confirm that this thermos maintains the temperature of your beverage for at least 9 hours. It is also surprisingly simple to clean. I easily tap out the loose tea leaves from the infuser and rinse from outside to remove any remaining tea debris. I think you can put it in the dishwasher, but I have not tried that. I have been hand washing it, since I use it every night. I have also dropped it more than once and it doesn't even have a dent. The leak proof claim is also valid. I test this daily when I carry it sideways in my purse, on my way to work. No leak, no dent, no problems holding temperature. Love it!

Innovative, Useful Infuser. Helpful hints for early adopters.
I use this innovative thermos to make hibiscus tea mornings and evenings during my commute, because hibiscus tea, it turns out, lowers your blood pressure. :) Pros: * It keeps water hot * It has a built-in infuser that works well * It's easy to clean. Cons/Advice: * The water temperature is going to be nearly the same as when you filled it, so either you should have ice cubes handy following steeping, or you should have a mug handy to pour into to let it cool off. * I prefer the mug option and discovered that pouring is a little sloppy. You should put not just the spout over the cup, but also the locking bracket. Even then, turbulence in the pouring system will cause a few drops to jump onto the table. Have a napkin handy. * It steeps better if you put it upside down. However, the top of the thermos is slightly convex, so it will wobble and easily tip over when upside down. * After filling with hot water, you (of course) will want to screw on the top. When you screw the top on, keep the top flap-cap open then close it afterward, otherwise you will create pressure inside the thermos and increase the likelihood of spraying tea everywhere when you pop the top (or when it pops open by itself, see below). * The locking system for the top flap-cap includes a lock button and a wire safety lock. If you don't use this wire safety lock, and stick the infuser into a backpack, stuff in your backpack might press the unprotected lock button and spray water over everything. Summary: I like this device. As far as I can tell, there is nothing remotely like it and it serves an important need for me. If you love tea, and you commute, you will use it—please follow my suggestions above to gain the most happiness from it. This seems to be a first-version design, with many opportunities for improvement; hopefully the Thermos will be reading these reviews and incorporate these thoughts in their next version.

Fantastic Mugs!
I bought this mug as a gift, but I have been using a couple of these same mugs for about 4 years. When full they will keep your tea or coffee hot for about 10 hours, a bit less time when its less full. I will make two mugs of tea before work and keep them in my work locker, by the time I start the second mug in the afternoon it is still a bit too hot to drink. The little locks on the lid work great, never had a mug spring open in my work bag. I wouldn't say the tea steeper is the best available, because it doesn't really give the tea leaves enough room to expand properly. However, it does trap even the smallest bits of tea leaf so you don't get little floaties in your tea. It does the job well enough and I still use it occasionally. The mug is a bit narrow so some bottle brushes may not fit in it to clean, but this is such a minor issue to me, its easy enough to find a brush that fits. The tea steeper can be a bit inconvenient to clean inside due to its narrow and deep shape, I just use my fingers and dish soap.

Excelente producto!!!
